And if you listen very hard, the tune will come to you at last.

;
This is the lyrics of <Stairway To Heaven> from the famous rock band - Led zeppelin, which always makes us feel the quiver of emotion. What will you get after passing through the stairway to heaven? What will you lose for it? What is your real target for pursuing?
For the last two sentences, they seems to come out from the great Chinese philosopher, all for one and one for all.

Theres a lady whos sure
All that glitters is gold
And shes buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and shes buying a stairway to heaven.

Theres a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook
Theres a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.

Theres a feeling I get
When I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who standing looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

And its whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter.

If theres a bustle in your hedgerow
Dont be alarmed now,
Its just a spring clean for the may queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
Theres still time to change the road youre on.
And it makes me wonder.

Your head is humming and it wont go
In case you dont know,
The pipers calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow,
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How evrything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

Generosity is not in giving me that which I need more than you do, but it is in giving me that which you need more than I do.

There is a space between man's imagination and man's attainment that may only be traversed by his longing.

Paradise is there, behind the door, in the next room;
but I have lost the key.

Perhaps I have only midlaid it.

complex or simple ephemeral or permanent

Human beings, such a complex creature, sometimes can just think things in its most simple way. However in other time, they may twist themselves up.

Just at the beginning of this week, I felt so happy, not for myself, because obviously I am in such confusion about my future or my life, but for SSL, who just got the offer from the company he is always dreaming of. Along with such ephemeral happiness, suddenly, another fact jumped into my life. In less than a month, he will go to Shanghai for his internship at that company, together with another team member of the lab. Maybe such feeling of leaving is so familiar or maybe I am such a kind of people who will not be used to leaving people who has been part of my normal life, this is the season of beginning of school, but at this moment, just as the leaves following from trees, all the feelings and thoughts still remain in the last season - the graduate time. Why I am feeling so sad?

From the perspective of life, in a way, there will be three kinds of people who will be appear in our life. The first are the ones who will be thought of when in  sad, helpless and suffering. The second are the ones who deceive you or make use of you. The last are the ones of strangers. However in my point of view, I really think that there will another kind of people between the strangers and the ones who will be in great position in your heart - the one who just has walked into your life and accompanied for a time, but finally they will walk out and leave away, only leaving you some special memory or nothing. In such kind of person, there are your mates of kindergarten, junior school, high school, former co-worker, teacher or the travelling companies and so on. It might be possible that you can't even remember their name. I believe, in most people's life, the number of the first and second kinds person would be much smaller than that of the two latter ones, just as the brain to choose tiny part of everyday happening to turn into memory. That 's also the reason why those two kinds of people will be special in our life.

Maybe it is time to move on, just as the end of the travelling. However I still believe if some one already as one of the fist categories people in my life, the relationship will definitely not be degraded. But others might not think so. Then such uncertainty or the feeling of losing some precious things or feelings make us so anxiety then it will become sad. In another word, the fear of changing is the main reason.

Nonetheless, just as the old saying - if moving tree, it will die; only if human changing, he will be survive, people need to change themselves or the environment for the better improvement. So maybe the best way to let some one still be in the most important person in your life, is to hope him to change into the way he wishes to be and be there if he is in need even he doesn't know that there will be some one.

Snow Patrol Lyrics

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
and just forget the world?

In such a busy city, to find someone who would like just lie here with me , watching season change and experiencing growing pains, that will be the most happiness thing in life.

Advice for Prospective Research Students

After these days of finding proper advisors and research groups among tons of web pages, I felt so exhausted and lost. Some kindly schoolmates gave me some advices, including such document. I really think it is worthy to share it, especially for those having the same experiences currently or in the future.

Advice for Prospective Research Students

Like most professors, I get several hundred emails a year from prospective students interested in coming to UVa for graduate school and joining my research group. I try to reply to all messages that are not obviously spam, but find most messages I receive make me less likely to want to accept the students sending them. This page provides some advice for prospective grad school applicants considering emailing me, but most of it probably applies to any other professor you want to contact also.

Who To Contact

Its a really bad idea to send spam emails to long lists of professors. These emails will never help you, and some professors will maintain blacklists of applicants who do this to make sure their application is rejected without consideration.

Your goal in sending email is not to contact as many professors as you can, but to identify a few professors who you might want as your research advisor and then to find which of those seem most promising as advisors and convince them that you would be a worthwhile student.

You should only contact professors with whom you have a genuine interest in working based on knowing something about them and what they do. You can find out about professors' research by looking at their web pages (professors who don't have web pages about their research are either not interested in recruiting students, not doing any research, or so famous they probably have someone to filter their email for them).

Do Your Homework

Before contacting a potential advisor, do your homework: read the advisor's home page (mine is http://www.cs.virginia.edu/evans/) and at least one recent paper (links to my papers are available at http://www.cs.virginia.edu/evans/pubs/).

If doing this doesn't give you any interesting ideas, this is probably not someone with whom you want to do research so you shouldn't waste time contacting her or him. If it does, send a short introductory email.

First Email

A typical message should go something like this:

From: Flipper Wordsfish
Subject: Prospective Student Interested in TSU Problem

Make sure your from address and subject lines are useful

Dear Professor Nemo,

Greeting: its safest to be a bit formal here.

I will be finishing a BS degree in Underwater Mathematics at the Atlantis Deep Ocean University this year. I am considering applying to UVa's PhD program and would be interested joining your Octople Cryptology research group.

Briefly introduce yourself in at most two sentences. Don't tell your whole life story. Be direct and clear about applying to grad school.

I found your paper, "A Linear-Time Solution to the Travelling Sea Urchin Problem", on your website (http://www.smith.org/urchin.html). I was fascinated by your result, especially as I have spent several summers studying the similar travelling sea cucumber problem as an intern at Microshifty Corp in the Attle Sea. (You can find a paper about my work on this at http://www.flipper.com/research/tscp.html)

Explain specifically what you read and where you found it (people sometimes publish several papers with similar names and forget which is which). A touch of flattery never hurts, but don't go overboard. If appropriate, relate it to your background and interests and briefly plug your work.

I believe your result is even more important than your paper implies, since it can be extended to solve the Travelling Salesman Problem and thus to prove P = NP.

Concisely describe your insight or why you are interested in the work.

Do you think it would be worthwhile to pursue this line of research? If you are interested, I can send you a proof sketch.

End with a clear, simple question.
Offer a suggestion on how to proceed.

Regards,
Flipper Wordsfish (flipper@adou.edu)

Closing — make sure to include you name and email address.

Of course, your insight isn't likely to be so significant as Flipper's. But, you should make an effort to raise an interesting question about the work described in the paper, to suggest extensions or applications of the work, or to relate it directly to something you have done.

It is definitely worth taking time to write clearly and consisely using correct spelling and grammar. As with all emails, the message should be broken into short paragraphs, the sentences should be simple and straightforward, and no line should have more than 80 characters.

What Not To Do

Never do any of these:

· Don't send information about your GRE scores, GPA, class rank, cholesterol levels, favorite movies, etc. and ask what your chances of admission are. Standardized tests and grades have minimal influence on your chances of admission and reveal very little about your potential as a researcher. No one can or should tell you anything about your chances of admission based on an email.

· Don't send a first email longer than one screenful (about 60 lines). You should be able to get across everything you need in a first email concisely and use longer emails if technical depth is required in follow ups.

· Don't waste space and time telling me how hard-working, creative and smart you are — demonstrate it with the contents of your message.

· Don't waste space and time telling me how brilliant I am. The fact that you are interested in joining my research group is flattery enough.

· Don't make generic statements about being interested in my work or how well it relates to your interests. I have projects in several different areas and can't figure out what you mean unless you describe a specific connection or interest.

· Don't attach anything to your email. If you want to provide additional content, you should do this by sending a URL (as plain text, not a link). If you are not able to create a web page, you may mention that you have a relevant paper and will send it to me if I request it.

· Don't use HTML encoded email or non-standard character sets. If you are a non-native English speaker, make sure your "From:" address appears using the English alphabet. If you have a common or difficult for English speakers to pronounce Chinese name, it is to your advantage to use a name that English speakers can pronounce and remember. I do realize it is very unfair for us to expect you to change your name for our convenience and cultural ignorance! But, once you get admitted you can and should tell people what you want them to call you.

· Don't use any fancy formatting in your email (including your message signature).

Follow Up

Since most professors get lots of email, there is some chance that even if you do everything right, your message will get lost in my inbox and you won't get a reply. If you don't get a reply after about a week, send a follow up email that politely asks if the message was received and includes the previous message. If you still don't get a response, that's a pretty good sign that the potential professor you are contacting is not someone you want as your advisor.

Conclusion

Getting into a good PhD program is extremely competitive and professors are strongly motivated to identify and attract the best possible research students to their group. At any department you would want to go to (including UVa), the acceptance rate is usually in the single digit percentages. At the most competitive departments, only a few slots every year are awarded to students without recommendation letters from people the faculty know well.

It takes work to find the right PhD program and advisor, but contacting potential advisors directly is your best way to find a research group that matches your interests and goals well and possibly to improve your chances of being admitted.

Once you've read and followed these directions, please feel free to contact me about coming to UVa to do a PhD in Computer Science. Your goal is to start an interesting email conversation about research ideas.

If you find that my research does not fit well with your interests, feel free to contact me for general advice and suggestions on other professors to contact. If you follow the suggestions above, I am likely to reply, especially if you ask questions that are not answered by http://www.cs.virginia.edu/WhyUVA/.

And you are free when there is no sun and no moon and no star.

And a slave to him who loves you because he loves you.

A pearl is a temple built by pain around a grain of sand.
What longing built our bodies and around what grains?

When God threw me, a pebble, into this wonderous lake I disturbed its surface with countless circles.
But when I reached the depths I became very still.

The most pitiful among men is he who turns his dreams into silver and gold.

We are all climbing toward the summit of our hearts' desire. Should the other climber steal your sack and your purse and wax fat on the one and heavy on the other, you should pity him.

The clibing will be harder for his flesh, and the burden will make his way longer.

And should you in your leanness see his flesh puffing upward, help him a step; it will add to your swiftness.

Every man loves two women: the one is the creation of his imagination, and the other is not yet born.

Men who do not forgive women their little faults will never enjoy their great virtues.

Love that does not renew itself every day becomes a habit and in turn a slavery.

Lovers embrace that which is between them rather than each other.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in  your dreams.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

What will you do if the people you care do the things not efficient as you expect?

Such scenario will often occur in every day life: if some one, specail in your life, have to do something or ask you for a favor, however, the way he perofrms or strives is extremely inefficient and annoying, what will you do, especially for the case that you are such a type of people who will think about things for the sake of him and would like him to do the things as you expect?

Maybe through inheritance or personality of full confidence, you might behavior angry or uncomfortable, no matter how great the solution you have contrived for him or how brilliant for the solution itself is, the result would be adverse. Maybe the one you care, in most cases, would be angry, incensed, enraged, for the reason that he means to find comfort or suggestion from you, however, what he gets are full of complain and critical comments or judgmet. Such huge contrast might cause to magnify the feeling of dissatisfaction and result the quarrel or trouble between the two person.

Then we would ask, if all you want to do, starts from the best intent for him, why the result turns out the opposite way? And who should be responsible for it? THe answer is on the way to handle such issue. Maybe for thousand times, you have said to yourself, to be calm, easy, however it always seems to lose control. Is it because you care him so much? Maybe, Is it because you inappropriately compare the way he did with that you might do in you were in his position? Maybe. But the most important reason accounting for the final result is your attitude and the lack of the consciousness to posit yourself on the position of him. Next time, try to use the words - if I were you, I might have done things in such way, not to use your voice or anger to show how disappointed you are.

graduation

The season of thesis, is the same season of graduation.

From some point, the end is the beginning. Life just likes a circle, iteratively and upward or backward.

Maybe during two years of postgraduation study, I haven't done my best. Though in the eyes of many of my friends, I am a utterly aesthete, trying to do everything as better as possible. However, the reality doesnot allow me to do so. Sometimes, compromise is another way of success. I don't quite agree so. But it seems I don't have much choices. Maybe next time, I will do better. will it have a second time? I hope so.

Despondency is another kind of happiness

Despondency is another kind of happiness. Do you believe it? I do so.

Despondency, depression of spirits from loss of hope, confidence, courage, to some extent, is a negative feeling. How can it be happiness. The reason lies in that when you feel dejection, the most possibility is that you have expected and hoped before. Only through such course, once something does not happen or someone does not do as you look forward to, such feeling will come. The stronger it is the more you expect. When someone still has such hope or has such faith, it is happiness.

Along with lots of depression, such faith might be decreased, even vaporized. Then there will be no despondency just the same as happiness. While listening to a song, the lyrics is so similar with the poem from Xi Murong, sensitivity, beauty, meanwhile with sadness. Maybe ........

artists and critics (1)

In the eyes of ordinary people, artists and art critics seem to be in the contradictive realm. However, these two have a extraordinary intimate relationship. The value of critic comes from the presenting of arts and artists are confined, located and written in art history through critcs. In another words, they are mutually supplement each other.

Later in 1980s, China began its modern liberation of thoughts, the same as the mordern art movement. The essential nature of such art movements resulted some artists created their works on the conforming purpose and shared the same perception of art, which led to the mutual style and inclination. In such movement, critics were also the participators. However their influence was not the organizers or propellers of such art movements, but more concerned with the recording history and setting up standards. Through such explanation, critics play a role as an bridge to guide the artists to cross a art trend to the other one and they are the most effective ones.

However, it does not mean that critcs can decide or change the art trends. Critics can not force the movement of arts as well as not create one. Art movements is more like an inclination in certain time, which is part of the trends of culture.

Some people might opponent that if they are so intimated, why critics is always making negative judgment to artists. Then in other side of such events, you may find that such criticism is just another form of support and conclusion. It also proclaims and prompts artist. In the beginning of 1990s, the "new generation" was just a small trend, through critics which fastly became popular. " female artists' s wold" is just another example. At the first level, those artists was not intent to start an art movement and not prone to constitute an organization or galleries, or even no claim . It is critics who noticed such new direction of movemen. Though such movement was just in the germinal status, having no basic theory or orientation, via the effort of critics, such name presenting such movement was settled down, which delegated a new style and view.

three passions by Bertrand Russell

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and the unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy-ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next ,because it relieves
loneliness---that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what---at last---I have found.
With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men.I have wished to know why stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagoren power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.

Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

You just blew it? Way to go!

A broken relationship, a poor grade on a project or exam, a lost job or collapsed business venture, an athletic trouncing – there are a million ways to fail. If you happen to find yourself on the losing end of a situation, we have just one thing to say: Congratulations! Whether you're responsible for a small defeat or a major flop, you're in good company and you can recover.

Beethoven, Einstein, Edison, General Douglas, MacArthur, Michael Jordan, Colonel Sanders, and Clint Eastwood are just a few of many successful failures who overcame early disappointment and scorn to accomplish great things. You can bounce back if you don't let yourself sink into frustration or despair, says Lybi Ma in the Psychology Today article "Down But Not Out", and if you remember that "A lot of good can come out of a big disappointment." Ma quotes Terri Needles, PhD, who recommends accepting the setback and the fact that you may never completely know all the reasons for it, facing your fears, and patiently thinking about your next steps. Writing for Ebony, Walter Leavey talks about Facing Your Fear of Failure. "There's nothing wrong with a bit of failure," he says, "as long as you're not overwhelmed…or paralyzed by it." And Lee Anna Jackson's advice for rebounding from career mistakes, her Black Enterprise article “Looking at It Another Way" sets the stage for success in many areas. Don't waste time regretting the past, she advises. Instead, make a list of things that tripped you up and challenge them.

Such is an letter from Q&A, for the purpose to sell a book, obviously. However, after reading these short paragraph, it seems answering the wilderment these days. As an postgraduate student encountering the final thesis, although lots of thoughts and directions, but little hope to truly give any attribution to such domain, I don't quite catch the real meaning for the final thesis, just for a doploma or the decision to do something to learn. Maybe the fear of failure makes someone to choose the easy and moderate way using C&P or the impression with popularity of plagiary gives the reason for doing this.

However from the bottom of heart, everyone with a little conscience, can tell right from wrong, and nonetheless having severe battle, finally will choose the hard route. Once the feeling of failure, such frangible confidence will crash down in the twinklingly of an eye. How many times when a person claims that he will suffer the failure will he eventually stand to the last minutes? Even everyone knows in front of the despair and disappointment, there is hopefulness and success, the most important step does he step forwards to bounce back, or just lingers besides the despair waiting for others sympathy and useless help.

The adage " look before you leap" are acknowleged to the public, but maybe it is the time to leap before you look so much. Getting out of trap of frustration, wok on it.

Catch A Falling Star

Raining day, for some extend, might impact one's mood, especially walking in heavy rain alone with everything wet. Somehow, this music from the radio coming into my heart, rings the bell of a movie -- love actually. You might remember such a scene a bunch of children singing for the Christmas, so gently and unsophisticated.

Music, always maintaining such magic, just like the sound. It seems much happy at that moment. While singint with it, quickly ran to home, there will always be my sunny day.

Perry Como was the Best Vocal Performance in the first Grammy, and the album got the Record Of The Year. Such charming voice mached with this magic sound.

Catch A Falling Star
-- Perry Como
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day

For love may come and tap you on the shoulder some starless night
Just in case you feel you want to hold her
You'll have a pocketful of starlight

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day

For love may come and tap you on the shoulder some starless night
Just in case you feel you want to hold her
You'll have a pocketful of starlight
(Pocketful of starlight, hm,hm,hm,hm,hm,hm)

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day

(Save it for a rainy, save it for a rainy, rainy, rainy, day)

For when your troubles start multiplyin' and they just might
It's easy to forget them without tryin'
With just a pocketful of starlight

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day

(Save it for a rainy day)
Save it for a rainy day

Happiness has none relation to affluence or poverty

Happiness is such a sense of human, which has none relation to affluence or poverty, but only connects innermost part of heart.

Eyesight, a common ability of a human, has tow divergent fuction: one is outward, which develop the world infinitely and broadly, while the other is inward, which detect innermost heart immensely and profoundly. Unfortunately, our eyes are conditioned to look outside, but limit to inside.

That 's the reason why in such time with abundant creature comforts, the GNH(Gross National Happiness) is dropping. Maybe it would be more happy and healthy for ordinary people stopping the steps to pursue the high material life.

life

Sometimes, when we lose ourselfves in fail and despair, in routine and constancy, in hopelessness and tragedy, we can thank God for Bavarian sugar cookies. Unfortunately, when there aren't any cookies, we can still find reassurance in familiar hand on our skin, or kind loving gesture, or subtly encouragement, or loving embrace or offer of comfort. And we mush remember that all these things -- the nuances, the abnormalities, the subtleties which we assure only access to arise our everyday life but in fact in much larger and noble cause they are here to save our lives.

Maybe when we look for miracle in our life, or the help from God, the truth treasure is the normal life with gratefulness no matter how subtle it is which will surely combine to make an entire picture of miracle of life.

Saint Valentine's Day

Saint Valentine's Day is one special festive in western world. In China, it is usually during the vacation of the Spring festival and it is traditional for every family doing cleans. While wiping dust on the book shelf, the wooden music box caught my eyes, which was a gift from my classmate in junior high school. Openning the cover, the golden little dancing statuaries still shined and beautiful. The familiar music came out after I drove the clockwork, just as the memory. From that moment, I can just get the meaning of the words from my friend WF when I planned to return it-- it is just the sign for your memory, even things changes.

For this special day, I just wanna to write something to memorize such moment. Meanwhile tell my friend YYF: no matter in what kind of a relationship you have now or before, try to remember those feelings. Memory will be your precious, no matter what end it will be. Be stronger.

Apocalypto from Mel Gibson

People may be astounded by the magnificence of Great Wall in China, or possibly be amazed at the appealing legend or science coincidence between the figures and fantastic theory numbers, however there did exist an old civilization of Mescoamerican Indian people - Maya, who are noted for their mathematics, astronomy, calender, and hieroglyphic writing system as well as elaborate and highly decorated ceremonial architecture, including temple-pyramids to worship the god of Sun, palaces and observatories, all built without metal tool.

Beyond all these splendid architectures, there were thousands of craftsmen or civilians died for their greatness. Such movie just represents both the prosperous and brutal aspects of Maya through the eyes of a clever and full of responsibilities young man living within a peace and happy clan, who was caught by other clansman being sacrifice to ease the anger of the god of Sun. Through the journey from wild jungle to the big city, it can be observed that the great differences between the jungle clan and the Maya society - social division of labor, social hierarchy system and the industry of dye and pottery. Then people might wander what cause the declination of Maya.

The people use the hot blood and jumping heart of other clansman as the sacrifice to the god to avoid epidemics and impetrate harvest, but the true reason lies in those mountains of rotten dead bodies from the ceremonies and the over disafforestation to break the balance of enviornment. What they do is just to intensify the disaster, but that is part of their culture immersing in every part of soul When the mother dipping the blood of body just roiling down from the top of pyramid and anointing it on the head of newborn baby, all the unreasonable things becomes sensible at such moment. That is the special power of belief and religion. Then we may ponder carefully what is the effect of belief and religion toward the current people or society.

Below is there a short story from the cacique of clan in the movie, which tells the reason from one other side. Many people would lay the blame of war to the aggressive nature or the necessary of survival. But they tell the truth? Or the truth turns out to be the lust of power, money or other material life.

And a Man sat alone,
  Drenched deep in sadness

And all the animals drew near to him and said:
We do not like to see you so sad...
"Ask us for whatever you wish and you shall have it."

The Man said: "I want to have good sight."
The vulture replies:"You shall have mine."

The Man said:"I want to be strong."
The Jaguar said:"You shall be strong like me"

Then the Man said:"I long to know the secrets of the earth."
The serpent replies:"I will show them to you."

And so it went with all the animals.

And when the Man had all the gifts that they could give...
  ...he left.

Then the owl said to the other animals:
"Now the Man knows much and is able to do many things...Suddenly I an afraid."

The deer said:"The Man has all that he needs."
  "Now his sadness will stop."
  But the owl replied:"No."
"I saw a hole in the Man..."
"Deep like a hunger he will never fill...
It is what makes him sad and what makes him want."

"He will go on taking and taking...
Until one day the World will say:
I am no more and I have nothing left to give."

School Reform

Though China has the reputation of strong basic education especially in Mathematics, the US government seems try to jump to higher grade by the means of school reform. When TNCLBA(The No Child Left Behind Act) gave a sign to require the states to educate impoverished children up to the same standards as their affluent counterparts, in exchange for federal aid. It also shows the deliberate attempt to reinforce reform by the Congress, which began in 1990's when the education system to introduce standards-based accountability systems that quickly showed promising achievements.

According to the part annual survey of Education Week magazine about student achievement which turned out that the student performance made a good progress, especially for fourth-grade math, which had gone up nearly two grade levels since 1992.

Due to the decision and deliberate attempt by the government, the achievement should cover all of the country. However, things did not go as planned. In the comment of The New York Times - " the achievement gains have fallen far short of what Congress hoped of when it passed the landmark federal law and also far short of what the country needs to keep pace with its economic rivals", it wholly gives out the attitude of majority to education system.

There are definitely lots of problems in it. First of all, race is still the cliche but also the most biggest problem, quite huge distance between Black, Hispanic and White, impoverished and rich, though there had been apparently gains of Black and Hispanic and the low-income fourth graders had risen at nearly three times the national average, which had substantially erased the while-minority achievement gap. Another problem is the geographic variation which might be the reasons of different teaching faculties and equipment in different states. And this quite reminds us about the contemporary appearance of achievement and worries about such impermanence success would evaporate soon.

And the journalist also had his foresight - " with the easy achievement gains easily already behind us, the next level of progress will require rigorous systemic change." The National Assessment of Educational Progress also makes its effort to enforce the system of assessment of teaching which will infect their payment to urge highly qualified teachers to fulfill their duties. And it also tries to find out new method to support and transform failing school, beyond labeling them failures and which would be considered as inspiring elements of better performance earlier.

After talking about the school reform in US, let's face the situation of Chinese education system. Though there are many celebrities coming from abroad talking their observation and experiences about the huge divergence between east and west, and give their suggestions and solutions toward current system, however I don't quite get it whether it is because of the self-deficiency of current system or the decisions are out of fully consideration, the outcome seems not very directly. Maybe the deficient of education resources make the problem complicated and many teachers confining themselves within the restriction of exam framework, they can't let the students truly do according to their interests and features. We really look forward to the truly reformation of education, which is key for the future progress for a developing country, no science achievement means nothing to a fast developing giant.
