GRE – Math

ARITHMETIC
INTEGER

The set of integers, I, is composed of all the counting numbers including positive, zero, and negative.

Integers that are multiples of 2 are called even integers, the rest are odd integers.

Integers in a sequence are called consecutive integers

Dividing evenly means the division of one integer yields a zero remainder.

An integer N is divisible by an integer x, means that N divided by x yields a zero remainder, and x is a divisor of N.

The multiplication of two factors yields a product , which is said to be a multiple of both factors.

Prime number has exactly two distinct positive divisors, 1 and N.

A fraction is a number of the form a/b, where a and b are integers and b is unequal to zero. The a is called the numerator of the fraction, and b is called the denominator .

Mixed fraction means an integer plus a fraction.

In our number system, all numbers can be expressed in decimal form using base 10. A decimal point is used, and the place value for each digit corresponds to a power of 10, depending on its position relative to the decimal point.

A fraction can be reduced to lowest terms by dividing their greatest common factor.

Exponents or power provide a shortcut notation for repeated multiplication of a number by itself. When the exponent is 2, we call the process squaring.

A square root of a positive number N is a real number which, when squared, equals N. If N>0, then the positive square root of N is called radical N.
